Shell Cordovan

Shell Cordovan gilt als das beste und edelste Glattleder der Welt. Nur das Leder der Gesäßpartie eines Pferdes erfüllt die gewünschten Eigenschaften. Das Leder ist an dieser Stelle aussergewöhnlich dick und nur gerade einmal zwei ovale schildförmige Lederstücke (Shells) der Größe eines DIN-A3-Blattes sind die kleine Ausbeute. Die zwei Shells pro Pferd reichen leider nur gerade für ein Paar Schuhe. Das Leder hat einen hohen Talganteil und ist dadurch besonders wasserabweisend. Es ist zudem deutlich dicker als Boxcalf, aber hat dennoch eine feine Geschmeidigkeit. Charakteristisch für das exklusive Material sind auch die besondere Farbtiefe und der elegante Glanz. Farben sind grundsätzlich alle möglich, am beliebtesten ist jedoch die Farbe Oxblood (Burgundy-Rot).  

Shell Cordovan Leather

Genuine Shell Cordovan is the art of tanning at its finest.  More than just a color, it is a very specific leather, from a particular part of a horsehide.  The irregular oval shaped shells are tanned, stuffed, shaved, and then polished – a process taking at least six months.  Each shell is slowly steeped in gentle vegetable liquors. The shells are genuine hot stuffed then slicked onto glass frames to dry.  Each shell is hand curried and shaved by highly skilled artisans to expose the shell. Dyes are hand rubbed on for a deep aniline finish. Finally, the shells are hand glazed to achieve the rich, glossy look and feel prized by fine craftsmen.

Die Gerbung

Die jahrhundertealte Technik der rein natürlichen und pflanzlichen Gerbung ist eine seltene und leider auch kostspielige Kunst. Der Gerbungsprozess dauert ganze sechs Monate und auf der Welt beherrscht nur noch eine einzige Firma diesen Prozess. Dies ist die im Jahre 1905 gegründete Gerberei Horween aus Chicago.  Horween bezieht ihre Felle aus Frankreich und dem französischen Teil Kanadas. Andere Nationen können weder die nötige Menge noch Qualität liefern. Zucht- und Sportpferde eignen sich nicht zur Herstellung von Shell Cordovan. In Frage kommen nur glückliche Tiere, die ihr Leben draußen in der Natur verbracht haben.
